CranioSacral Therapy

CranioSacral Therapy (CST) or the Healing Power of a Gentle Touch

CST is practiced by a wide variety of health care professionals, from Osteopathic Physicians to Dentists, Nurses, Occupational Therapists, Massage Therapists and many more. Developed by osteopathic physician John E. Upledger, D.O,O.M.M., in the 1970s, CST is based on the theories of William Sutherland, D.O., an osteopath from the early 1900s.

Dr. J. Upledger wrote a book called “Your Inner Physician and You.” In his book, he explains the origin of his discovery along with specific cases and treatment outcomes. He also addresses some of the most commonly asked questions on what CST is and does (paperback-North Atlantic Books, Berkeley, California and Upledger Institute Enterprises, Palm Beach, Florida-1997).

CranioSacral Therapy (CST): What is it?

CST is a natural, hands-on method to help relieve pain and promote relaxation. It does it by assisting the body in self-correcting restrictions and dysfunctions in the CranioSacral System.

What is the CranioSacral System?: The CranioSacral System is named for the bones involved in the system. They are the bones of the skull (cranial), the vertebral column, the sacrum and the coccyx (sacral). Its anatomy includes the meningeal membranes, the osseous structures which attach to the membranes, all the connective tissue structures related to the membranes (muscles, ligaments, tendons, fasciae), the Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) and the structures which help to produce, resorb and contain CSF.

How CranioSacral Therapy works

The body appears to function directly or indirectly as part of the CranioSacral System.

Daily stresses and strains create imbalances and distortions in the CranioSacral System as they put pressure on the brain and the spinal cord, resulting in possible sensory, motor and intellectual dysfunctions. Because the CranioSacral System influences and is influenced by the nervous, musculoskeletal, vascular and lymphatic systems, the CranioSacral therapist sees the individual being treated as an integrated totality.

CranioSacral Therapy is a holistic approach.
